Julie Black, M.Ed. Bilingual Education
Julie Black has been teaching ESL, bilingual, and Dual Language education for over 30 years, both in Mexico and the United States. Her experience includes English as a Second Language, Transitional Bilingual Education, Late Exit Bilingual Education, One and Two-Way Dual Language Education, English as a Foreign Language, English Language Arts, and Spanish Language Arts. She also has experience teaching at the university level, as a secondary teacher trainer, as a K-6 assistant principal and as a K-6 English Language Department chair. Ms. Black is an active member of the National Association of Bilingual Educators and co-hosted a presentation this past school year on Teaching for Biliteracy at both the state and national levels.
Ms. Black’s strengths lie in Teaching for Biliteracy as well as teaching Writing. Her personal publications include essays on the mythology and legends of Ancient Mexico, as well as “The Last Toltec King,” a historical novel, published in 2014.
Honoring and celebrating students’ cultural and linguistic identities, and building upon their linguistic strengths, are the core of her personal educational philosophy. She believes that teachers and administrators can make a powerful impact by putting students’ languages, cultures, interests, identities and ways of knowing at the center of the classroom.
