Dear Fuente Families,

California state law (Education Code 53008) requires all students in grades K-2 to be screened annually for reading difficulties. Additionally, we will screen any student in other grades who has experienced reading difficulties in the past. One of the key goals of this screening is early intervention. Research shows that when children receive support early, it can prevent or lessen the severity of academic challenges as they grow older. By identifying and addressing potential difficulties now, we can help ensure your child builds a strong foundation for future learning.

Your child will participate in this universal screening using the Amplify screener, which is designed to help identify students who may be at risk for developing reading difficulties and who need additional support. Students who screen as below benchmark may be at risk for future reading struggles.

It is important to note that screening results alone do not diagnose dyslexia, developmental language disorder (DLD), or any other learning disability. Instead, it helps educators determine which students may need extra support to strengthen their reading skills. Your child’s teacher monitors their progress and measures their growth regularly. If concerns arise, we will reach out to discuss the next steps.

This year, the screening takes place during the month of September. For more information about the screener, please visit Amplify Screener Website, https://tinyurl.com/jdnwdwks. The screening takes approximately 5-10 minutes and will be administered in either Spanish, English or both, one-on-one by our reading screener, Maestra Ortiz.

After the screening, you will receive a detailed report of your child’s results. The report will highlight areas where your child demonstrates strong reading skills as well as areas where they may need extra support. Your child’s teacher and our staff will work to provide targeted support to help them grow. We will also send information on how you can support your child’s reading development at home.

Pursuant to California Education Code Section 53800, parents and guardians may annually submit to the school a written request to excuse their child from screening. If you wish to opt your child out of this screening, please submit your request in writing to Angela Kidd by September 5th.
